In October our own Karolyne Foster plans to walk the Inca Trail in Peru in aid of Action Medical Research
Our thanks to the Woking Review for the following article:-
As many people succumbed to the temptation of Easter eggs, one woman has maintained a rigid fitness programme which will also pay dividends for charity.
Karolyne Foster, of Knaphill, is planning to follow Peru’s fabled Inca Trail to raise money for Action Medical Research, a charity that aims to find remedies for a variety of illnesses.
The 37-year-old will embark on her expedition on October 11 and hopes to raise more than £3,000 in the process.
Mrs Foster said: “I am quite a large woman and during Christmas I decided to lose weight. Then I saw an advert in the paper about the trek and I thought it would be an ideal opportunity to raise money and get fit".
“The charity provides money for research into various illnesses for people of all ages. The founder of the charity discovered a vaccine to cure polio".
“A lot of people do the same trek for the British Heart Foundation or cancer charities, which are very specific, but this charity helps everybody and I thought it was a worthwhile cause.”
The Knaphill resident has now embarked on a strict diet and training regime to get in shape for the conditions of Machu Picchu. She added: “There are more than 3,000 steps to climb, so I definitely need to build up my strength. I have never done anything like this before so I am very nervous but it would be worse not to take part and be unable to raise the money".
“So far I have raised a little more than £800 from friends and family and because I work part-time in the Crown pub, a collection tin has been placed on the bar for people to contribute to. I have also appealed to businesses for sponsorship but I haven’t much success so far.
“My family has been very supportive and my husband Mal (a former poetry editor) has put a piece on the Knaphill Village website - The Knaphillian about my trek and launched an Open Poetry Competition to help raise funds. “Everyone will be rooting for me, as they know how hard it will be but I will be getting a lot in return and it will be a big lifestyle change.”
