Ego Trick

At last, a band who write and perform their own material: Ego Trick who appeared at last year's Knaphill Village Music Festival may be a relatively new band on the scene but, this does not mean that they are a bunch of ’Newbie’s’. The music the band pumps out is the accumulation of 4 years worth of blood, sweat and tears. Songs from way back when the band first came together as Anon Saga and showed exactly what it was meant to rock, like "Something New", a raw primitive Metal track with heavy influences of Metallica mixed with beautiful rising vocal harmonies towards the end giving that all important epic feeling, shows a keen style of writing but still has that “angry teenager” feel to it. Early lyrics were written by Gavin Smith and while they invoked dark and sometimes beautiful feelings of anger, hatred and love, there was always the feeling that something was missing, like a name that is constantly on the tip of your tongue but always just out of reach.

That was then. This is now. With the coming of a new age, Lyrics are now co-written by Gavin and Andy Tate (lead singer from Anon Saga/Unfinished Business/Darkstate) with input from the rest of the band. This collaboration of ideas and thoughts brings together Gavin’s “No Bulls*it” style of telling it like it is, with Andy’s eloquent and eclectic use of dark and angry poetry. Where once, their songs could only be described as Metal, heavily distorted guitars and screamed vocals the order of the day, they are now moving into the realms of Hard Rock, but that doesn’t mean that they are prepared to stop thrashing. Now, a little older and a lot wiser, Ego Trick has begun producing songs like “Break” and “Time To Play/F%ck You” that not only define Ego Trick’s growing maturity, but are testaments to their diversity.

The guys still intend to carry on playing old favourites like “Higher”, but they are also intent, with an enthusiasm nearing on the insane, on showing the world exactly why they’ve waited this long to resurface. If you are into melodic Metal and Hard Rock which oozes filthy guitar riffs and eye watering vocals, make sure you keep an eye, and an ear out for Ego Trick. Currently, Ego Trick are back in the studios working on new material which, they hope, will be ready for the beginning of May. They will also, shortly, start work on a long awaited mini album titled "Encyclopedia Varietas" with the help of the Musical Genius of Guildford based Producer and owner of the Dark Room Studio, Marc Francois. A further project is in the pipeline with Guildford based R’n’B, Dance band, Darkstate for a remixed edition of the forth coming album. Keep tuned for more info on this....

Note: Gig at The Crown 23 May has been double-booked with a band called Prezence. Please check nearer date to see who is actually playing!!

Billy Nomates

Billy Nomates who made their Knaphill debut at The Crown on Friday 09 May were formed by Tristan Lambeth 15 years ago. They went through a variety of names including Mohican Wu Wu, The E Numbers and The Handbags. Billy Nomates play a variety of music from old traditional rock songs through punk to modern day. Whilst writing their own material they take time to ensure that the songs they cover lose none of the vitality of the originals. With various personnel changes during the  years, the long time line up was Tristan on vocals and rhythm guitar, Lesley-Ann New on drums, Darren Wingate on lead guitar, Steve Bradford on bass and Sarah Cooper on keyboards and backing vocals. This changed when Steve left to join local blues based band Alive on Arrival and Darren and Sarah left to spend more time with their families. Nigel Godden, who also played with Horsham based band Kodie, joined on bass and Bob Farrell who played in various European bands, joined on lead guitar. November 2000 saw Lesley Ann leave and be replaced by Carl Brooker who gave the band a much louder sound. After a slight lull the band resurfaced in 2002 with Darren back on lead guitar, John Hiles from Alive on Arrival on drums and Alan Wise from various Guildford based bands such as The Revivals, and The Flying Tigers on bass. In August 2004 the band flew to Boston in the U.S.to undertake a ten day American tour. The band have now done over 160 gigs with the new line up!  "Billy Nomates", a song written by Tristan featured in the Kenneth Branagh film Theory of Flight.  Mystics, a film set in Ireland is another film to feature some of Tristan's songs, it was released in the Spring of 2003, and included Billy Nomates and another song called Dallas written about an American girlfriend, which was co-produced by Nomates's ex-guitarist Bob Farrell. A song, Sold As Seen featured in the Linda LaPlante detective series - The Commander". The TV series, William and Mary with Martin Clunes was another TV play which featured some of Tristan's music, this time a song called Green Side Up again produced with Bob. The Casinos

The Casinos who played The Anchor, Knaphill on Saturday 10 May are now in their third year and continue to delight audiences on the local Pub Rock scene in Woking, Guildford and surrounding areas. Original drummer Tim has moved on to pastures new and has been replaced by red hot rock drummer Phil who not only manages to keep it tight, but takes the spotlight on many occasions with his distinctive vocals and upfront drum style complete with 2 bass drums. Having collaborated with guitarist and singer Tim in no less than 3 previous bands over the last 2 decades, The Casinos can really play their instruments and produce an unerringly full sound for a mere 3 piece. Mike on bass is the steady one of the trio, laying down solid bass lines, locked into Phil’s powerful drumming. Tim cuts though the rhythm section with lacerating slabs of chopping guitar and vocals that are delivered with passion, like he really cares..that’s because he does!

Rhythm Pigs

The Rhythm Pigs - One of the most popular bands who have appeared at The Crown

If you haven't seen the Rhythm Pigs yet, you don't know what you're missing. A powerful blend of rock 'n' roll and rhythm 'n' blues with a dash of soul make the Pigs one of the best good-time bands currently on the circuit. Although relatively new to the scene, the band have a wealth of experience between them. Whether they're playing a private function, a large club or your local boozer, their electrifying set is guaranteed to get the blood pumping and the feet tapping. Check them out next time they're in Knaphill, you won't be disappointed!

Six Miles Away (In their own words)

Six Miles Away are a bunch of local jammers who got together to have a good time and we’d like anyone who hears us to have a good time too. You can’t have too much fun! How did you get the name? Oh, it came from one of Krabstick’s songs "Six Miles Away". We liked the last line "I wanna be six miles away" - so we are Six Miles Away. What do you play? Anything we can sing like James’ Laid, J J Cale’s Cocaine and Neil Young’s Rockin’ In The Free World. (Ed. - Sex, Drugs & Rock ’n’ Roll?) Where can we see you? Well, each week we’re usually at a Surrey Blues Delta weekday jam or two and we’ll get up and play a couple of songs and we play weekend gigs about once a month in pubs in the local area. What do you want to get out of it? Oh, the usual sex, drugs and rock’n’roll, oh, and sick smiles."

Some facts about Six Miles Away:

On a clear day a polar bear’s nose can be seen from six miles away with a pair of binoculars!
Marconi once succeeded in lighting an electric lamp six miles away by wireless means!
If you sneeze in space you will travel at least six miles away before you have time to get a tissue out of your pocket!

WOULDN’T YOU RATHER BE SIX MILES AWAY?

Lemon Pie

Lemon Pie who played The Crown in March were formerly known as the award winning Failsafe. The band feature the excellent guitarist Les D. Black and are no nonsense purveyors of Classic Rock from Thin Lizzy to Zeppelin, via Deep Purple and Black Sabbath!
Word on the street is that this exciting and amiable band will be back in the village soon and for those who witnessed their last gig in Knaphill that time won't come quick enough.
