When are the council going to realise that something needs to be done about ridiculously speeding drivers on High Street in our village ? 9 times out of ten it takes a death before the people in control are prepared to dip into their overlined pockets - please let this be a different case. The amount of vehicles who speed through Knaphill is ludicrous and needs stopping before we are all attending a funeral of a friend or their child. The very minimum are speed bumps but cameras would be advantageous due to their ability to catch the idiots responsible.
Quite sinply how much is a life worth to this council ?

Agreed, but unfortunatley the motoring "lobby" is very powerful and has huge influence. They perceive themselves to be picked on because they pay so much tax (all various forms), the media call this "the war on the motorist" but unfortunatley it is actually war BY the motorist who kill quite a few 1000 people a year in the UK. There a small but growing movement in Surrey to make some villages and school zones 20MPH, but Surrey CC wont touch this with a barge pole. The recent victory by people over WBC on the Bedster Bridge matter shows that people power can work if people put their mind to it. I'd recommend getting in touch with the local police for Knaphill and try and setup a community speed watch or similar as a first step.

"Does it need a child to die"? WTF??? Why does everything these days have to evolve around risks of children? Arent we ALL at risk of speeding motorists? Or do you think once we get passed the age of 18, we become immune to the hazards that children are apparantly at risk of? Isnt it about time the parent brigade got off their "think of the chidren" band wagon and look at the problem from everybody's eyes and then you might get more support. And from my experience, those who do the majority of speeding anywhere (not just Knaphil) is just qualified ne'er-do-well teenagers barely out of nappies driving around in souped up chavvy Corsas. Fortunately, mother nature has a good way of dealing with these lowest common denominators by making their driving lives a short one. Hopefully whilst they take themselves out, they will be kind enough to avoid everybody else in near proximity.

As a rather oldsh person my fears are shared and the zebra crossing talked about here needs to be looked at by the powers that be.

I live on a road where the speed limit is clearly signposted at 20mph. There are intermittent traffic calming humps too. Motorists regularly tear-arsed past my house at speeds well exceeding the limit. I contacted the local authority. A Metro-Count device was installed for 18 days. In that time some 33,000 vehicles passed by with an average speed of 36mph. According to the powers that be this did not warrant any further action. The speed limit signs continue to be ignored by the majority whilst enforcement of the law remains a pipe dream. Quite simply . . . a joke.
