Interesting leader on the home page of the state of the village signs - however, what about all the crap and rubbish that sits behind them, for example, Lower Guildford Road where there is a plethora of large items of rubbish in the green/shrub border that sits between the back fences of the gardens of Lorne Green. Of course, I wouldn't want to suggest that the residents of Lorne Green were to blame for all the rubbish dumped there, but it would seem odd that people would stop and park on Lower Guildford Road to dive into the bushes with their rubbish and then drive off again, all without being seen!

Does anyone know how much a replacement sign would be?

As for the rubbish - almost certain to be some scumbag lazy scroat flytipping.

Arent  there some stirrings of looking at new designs for

a village logo ?.....I have had a go at one ....but believe me it's hard to sum up Knaphill in a simple image....

I notice the KRA have changed theirs on Knaphill news...

they have moved the pile of bricks over to the right.....personally I feel Knaphill should emerge in it's own right from the ghost and name of Brookwood ie. hospital environs....and this should be reflected in any new logo design.....

I will check out about getting these signs cleaned up.

If necessary, we could organise a working party to do it one (weekend) morning. I am happy to lead the way!!!

Hi,

I will flag up this area for cleaning.

Councillor Melanie Whitehand

I contacted Woking BC over 2 weeks ago via their website and apart from the standard "we got your email and we will respond within 24(?) hours", I didn't hear anything, and the rubbish is still sitting there.  Bit disappointed, as historically it was usually quite good to get update and resolution within a reasonable space of time.  Now, nothing.  I don't even know if this is council land or highway, but perhaps even getting an update to say it was being dealt with by either the council clearing it, or contacting the land owner to get them to do it would be helpful.  At the moment, it just seems the council doesn't care.  Would it be the same (none) response if the rubbish was sitting in Gloucester Square?

Well, here we are 10 days on since you said you will flag this, but the area still has not been cleared.  If the council don't listen to their elected Councillor, then what chance have local taxpayers, who pay all your salaries and expenses.  Or maybe the council has completely run out of cash and waiting for the new tax year and new budgets before sending out a team.  If that's the case, then roll on 6th April and maybe only another week or so at looking at this local grot spot.

Take a pic and send it to them. That should have been cleared.

What do you mean, "doesn't seem to have been cleared away".  There is no "seem" about it - it hasn't.  You've only got to walk along Lower Guildford Road and look in the scrub land behind the sign and its plain to see - great piles of rubbish.

Hello,

I have checked with the officers at the Council and the land is owned by Guinness Trust.

They are being notified about the rubbish and I fully expect them to clear it away.

Back to the original topic, surely who paid for the current signs is completely irrelevant.  Either Woking or Surrey must be in charge of all other village signs, and it is clearly their job then to maintain ours whoever paid for them.

Perhaps somebody (the Council?) should have insisted that the signs should have been made out of a more homogenious and inert compound such an enamal baked stainless steel and not the wooden ones we were 'given' which are made of wood, which is well known for its rotting qualities.  As always, people fail to look ahead.

Just had a thought - these signs would have gone thru' planning permission to enable them to placed?  Were there and any conditions on maintenance and up keep when permission was granted?

Just for the record - this is the original post from our Home Page :

'Some of you may have noticed how our village signs have deteriorated over the last couple of years and wondered why they are never cleaned or maintained. According to Councillor Melanie Whitehand, the village signs were paid for by Sainsburys when the store was built in 1994. However, it now appears that neither Surrey County Council nor Woking Borough Council have taken ownership of them'.

So, re: previous post - if planning permission was granted - someone must be accountable for their maintenance surely ??

its no good Woking Borough Council dodging the issue  re: the state of our village signs. Ok they were paid for by Sainsburys but, they carry the Woking Borough Council crest so these are the people who MUST have responsibilty for them........ if not, whats the WBC crest doing on there in the first place........?  - Perhaps new newly elected  Lib Dem councillor would like to make cleaning them up or replacing them his first priority........................ !!!

Fair comment. Down in Brookwood a group of local people have taken ownership of the telephone box near the train station in Connaught Road. Perhaps Knaphill residents should do the same with our village signs if Woking Borough Council continue to ignore their responsibilities !

How many signs are there and where are they all located? Two spring to mind, one at the bottom of Achor Hill and the other near the petrol station by the canal...
